One of the primary knowledge foundations needed for information security and cybersecurity is an understanding of networks. Networks are the foundation of enterprises, governmental agencies, and the like. They are also the requisite step most attackers must take in order to gain unauthorized access to an environment. Therefore, having an in depth understanding of network protocols, topologies, devices, etc., are critical to preventing most cyber attacks.

The beauty of becoming an InfoSec guru is that gaining a strong foundational understanding of networks does not require pouring thousands of dollars in a college course. Instead, there are a variety of networking courses and certifications that can be undertaken. Some of the primary pathways to acquiring basic and intermediate networking concepts are via certification prep courses and certification exams.

The best network certification courses are (in no particular order):

  • TestOut Network Pro Course

This course provides basic and intermediate networking principles. However, what really sets apart the course is its labs. TestOut pro utilizes labs that replicate real life networking technician and architect scenarios. As a result, students in the course not only walk away with enough network knowledge to take the CompTIA Network++ exam, but also with the knowledge of what networking devices, strategies, and topologies to use outside of the classroom.

  • CompTIA CertMaster Learn for Network+ (N10-007) – Individual License

If your primary goal for building your understanding of network is to take the CompTIA Network++ exam, then a good way to start is by acquiring a learning license from the CompTIA store. CompTIA provides learning licenses for each of their exams in order to prepare prospective test takers and licenses for exams last for 12 months.

  • Implementing and Administering Cisco Solutions (CCNA) v1.0 course

Along with CompTIA Network++ , one of the most well regarded certifications to demonstrate entry and intermediate network knowledge is the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). Like CompTIA, Cisco also provides courses to support prospective test takers of the exam

Well, I hope the information provided in this post serves as a good starting place for those who are seeking a technical foundation to pivot in InfoSec related careers. This blog series is ongoing, and I am always open to hearing what other topic my readers would like to know about in regards to the field.
